Supplier Spotlight: Turkey at Johnson & Swarbrick

Who are you?

We are Johnson & Swarbrick, based at Swainson House Farm in a village called Goosnargh, on the outskirts of Preston.

What do you make?

Every year we produce the Goosnargh Cornfed Turkey, especially for the Christmas table.

When did you start rearing turkeys?

Swainson House Farm has been home to our Goosnargh poultry for the past 30 years (which has become renowned around the world). And our Goosnargh Cornfed Turkey has been a Christmas favourite at Swainson House farm for the past 21 years.

What makes your turkeys so special?

We get the turkeys in at six weeks old and feed them on our secret recipe, all mixed by our team in our on-site feed mill. Our beautifully cared for turkeys are reared slowly to give a great taste. The cornfed turkeys are housed in large straw-filled barns, giving them plenty of space to run free.

We are passionate here at Johnson & Swarbrick about the nation’s favourite Christmas bird, as we are with all our poultry. The late Reg Johnson’s motto (the founder of Johnson & Swarbrick) is never more true that “a happy bird is a tasty bird”.

What’s your favourite way to enjoy your turkey?

After checking the answer phone on Christmas morning, I can relax and take in the family time, which is special at Christmas. My Christmas dinner wouldn’t be complete without our Goosnargh Cornfed Turkey, roasted to perfection, sitting on our dinner table, with all the trimmings.

If you’d like to try some of the famous cornfed turkeys from Johnson & Swarbrick, they’re currently available in the Bowland Food Hall at Holmes Mill.
