Supplier Spotlight: Tennants Fresh Fish

Who are you?

We are a family-run purveyor of the finest fresh fish and seafood, based in Accrington, Lancashire, who love what we do.


What do you supply?

We source sustainable fish from day boats across the country and worldwide. We supply the best Scottish salmon, through to Sashimi grade tuna from around the world. Shellfish, like oysters from Colchester, mussels from Scotland and Wales, and hand-dived scallops from Scotland are also just a sample of the fabulous produce we supply. We also use day boats so that we can trace back all produce from the boat that caught our fish, meaning we have traceability at all times.


When did you start selling fish?

Tennants began in 2012, having had over 25 years’ experience with the fishing industry. We started by selling from a small van at local farmers’ markets and did a home delivery service. Upon visiting a particular local farmers’ market in the Ribble Valley, we met Gill Mellor, the sous-chef for celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of River Cottage Cookery school. He commented on how lovely and fresh our fish looked and asked if we delivered locally. The week after, our wholesale business began. We now supply to over 40 award-winning local restaurants daily.


What makes your fish so special?

Due to us using the finest day boats, our fish is caught overnight, dropped to the dock, then shipped out to us. We have a little secret that not many people know, but the fishmonger who prepares all our fish is actually allergic to fish.

Our day starts at 1am – a typical day in the life of a fishmonger – so we are often awake before the birds. We listen to our orders and receive our fish at around 4am. The fun then begins filleting, scaling and preparing all the fish to each individual customer’s requirements. It’s then packed into fish containers and delivered in refrigerated vans to the customer the same day.

All our fish is lovingly filleted by hand. Nothing is mass produced, no nasties are added, and nothing is pre frozen. It’s just wonderful fresh fish – how fish used to be. We are also proud to be part of the National Federation of Fishmongers, the official body which represents the retail sector of the fishing industry.



What’s your favourite way to enjoy your fish?

Fish is so versatile and can be prepared so quickly in so many ways. It offers lots of health benefits too, including for the brain, eyes, heart, nails and skin. Our particular favourite is Conwy Mussels in white wine sauce, served with a farmhouse chunky bread to dip, which makes a perfect hearty, healthy meal.
